Govt. Proposed Bank Commission

After a long speculation Govt. proposed bank commission. Country's renowned economist Prof. Wahiduddin Mahmud will be chairman of the proposed bank commission. According to the finance ministry, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal had a meeting with Wahiduddin Mahmud on Wednesday at the secretariat.

Earlier, former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith had said in the budget statement of the fiscal year 2015-2016 that he wanted to form a commission to evaluate the activities of the banking sector. Muhith argued that the bank sector has grown significantly now it's time to determine sound policies and patterns of growth.  

CPD(Center for Policy Dialogue)  also welcomed the proposition. According to them,"Bank commission can bring the sector out of fragile scenario."Economist Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, distinguished fellow at CPD, spoke in this regard while addressing a press briefing titled "Proposed Banking Commission: CPD's Reaction" at Brac Centre in the capital this morning.

Claiming that the country's banking sector is now being controlled by a handful of individuals and entities, Dr Debapriya said they expect to see recommendations made by the commission regarding the sector reflected in the next budget.
